The Space Within.

Porcelain
45cm x 47cm x 35cm (each)

Exploring themes of the body, the breath and the human condition, the events of 2020 are very much imbued within this series of work. A reference to the protection of the ribcage and the vulnerability of the breath.

An exploration of the boundaries between materiality, technique and process, along with authorial control, the series of work investigated autonomous movement and transformation of form during the firing process, by developing a technique to suspend flat porcelain forms in the kiln.

Forms coexist between a vital balance of curved porcelain and enfolded negative space. Space and mass are treated equally, with an integral interplay of voids encased within contorted porcelain. Each form connects into one another, to explore the tension to create equilibrium.

‘Symbiosis II.’

Porcelain, Waste Steel, Waste Cotton, Collected beach sands 39cm x 36cm x 28cm (each)

Commensalism, Mutualism, Parasitic. To be successful, all symbiotic relationships requires an element of balance.
A series of discarded materials are collected; steel, offcuts of textiles bound for landfill, along with collected beach sands to memorialise place, and to reference memory. Soaked in porcelain slip, a means of binding them, my interest in the metamorphosis from raw material to finished form. Embedding and entombing unexpected materials creates in a sense a new composite.

Movement is explored by the shrinkage and warping of porcelain, along with the melting point of the steel. As the metal melts, it forces the porcelain to split and tear, creating visible crevices and fissures allowing the armature to become visible and integral. Combining unexpected composites, is to seek a sense of dematerialisation, seeking coalescence - encouraging movement, alteration and deconstruction of one form into another.
